Cabinet Tips
- Check that your cabinet quote includes installation. This is typical.
- It’s best practice to have the cabinet supplier install your cabinets. Any damage or missing parts can be solved with 1 phone call. Keep it simple.
- Simple designs and shorter upper cabinets can be more affordable and still look great.
- Ask your cabinet designer for price options like 30″, 36″ and 42″ upper cabinets. You might be surprised by the price difference.
- Spend a little extra and include pull-out drawers and a Lazy Susan for easy access.
- Knobs or hardware is an easy way to dress up new or old cabinets.
- An oversized kitchen can lead to wasted space and added expense.
- Select your appliances first and then design your kitchen around your appliance package.
- Choose plywood boxes and hardwood door and drawer fronts.
- Cabinet manufacturers offer lots of cabinet accessories. Ask your cabinet designer to review all cabinet accessories offered by the manufacturer.
- Stained cabinet finishes are more durable. Painted cabinets tend to chip and show damage.
- Remind your cabinet installer to locate the studs behind your drywall. Remind him not to miss the studs while installing your cabinets.
- Check that your installer is leveling your cabinets and not just installing on top of a sloping floor.
- Check that all cabinet openings are the same at the top and bottom. This will ensure that appliances fit properly.
- Remind your installer to shim up the base cabinets so that the cabinets sit at the same height as your finished floor. This will allow for proper installation of your appliances.
- Check that your cabinet supplier included matching shoe moulding. To be installed where your cabinets meet the finished floor.
- 2-3 weeks after installation, schedule your cabinet installer to return and adjust your cabinet doors and drawers. Your cabinets adjust to the humidity levels in your home and will need a quick realignment.
